The SMS digital Data Challenge – data science meets steel industry

04. November 2016

SMS digital, a digital unit that etventure helped to establish for the plant manufacturer SMS group, is launching its first Data Challenge. Data scientists from around the world can take part. Participants face the challenge of developing an algorithm that can identify and measure the origin of production defects during the steel casting process. The winner of the challenge will receive prize money totaling €15,000.

Algorithms for industrial steel production

‘Data Challenge’ is now a well established format – at least among data scientists and developers. Yet the SMS digital Data Challenge is unique. Instead of seeking a solution to an e-commerce problem, as is so often the case, the subject area of this challenge is the industrial production of steel. Defects during steel casting are a huge problem, and the Düsseldorf-based SMS group, one of the world’s leading plant manufacturers, is not immune to this problem. If defects are identified at an early stage of the casting process, this not only dramatically reduces the costs of the steel production process but also slashes its CO2 emissions. The aim is to use data mining and analysis methodologies in order to improve the current defect diagnosis system.

What should participants expect?

By setting this challenge, the SMS digital Data Challenge is seeking the assistance of specialists from all over the world. They can register to take part and submit their suggested solutions up until November 18. Over 100 candidates have already registered to take part in the Data Challenge. On November 29, the jury will then announce the top ten entries. The candidates and teams who submitted these entries will then present them at the Presentation Day event. The final decision will be made in early December. The winners will receive prize money totaling €15,000 and the runners-up will receive €5,000. Furthermore, the top ten candidates will be invited on a tour of a steel plant belonging to one of the SMS group’s clients.
